June is African American Music Appreciation Month! In 1979, President Jimmy Carter created June as
the month to celebrate the African American musical influences that include an essential part of our
nation’s treasured cultural heritage. In June 2009, President Barack Obama, commemorated African
American Music Appreciation. In 2016, President Obama proclaimed June as African American Music
Appreciation month – “to defend our country’s enduring promise of freedom and opportunity of all.


Our Black Music cultural embodies genres ~ Gospel ~ Folk ~ Blues ~ Military ~ Jazz ~ Rhythm & Blues ~Rock and Roll ~ Hip-Hop


These genres do not even scratch the surface. African American musicians have developed and
influenced classical, country western, pop, dance, disco, techno, and house music. African American
music elements are embraced globally.
